Johnson lifts Hayfield into finals

David Johnson recorded his third double-double in as many games to lift the Hayfield boys' basketball team to a thrilling 59-57 victory over Chatfield in the semifinals of the Rebel Holiday Classic tournament at Southland Friday night.

Tyler Kramer added 11 points for Hayfield (2-1), including a go-ahead jumper that gave the Vikings the 57-55 lead -- their first since 6-5 -- with one minute to play. Chatfield retaliated with Chad Eickhoff, who scored the tying bucket with seven seconds to play after hauling down an offensive rebound.

After calling a timeout, Hayfield hurried the ball to half-court and took another timeout to organize its final shot. Kramer set a back-screen for Johnson, who was alone in the lane for a short jumper. Johnson rebounded his surprising miss and tipped it in with what Hayfield coach Chris Pack claimed to be .5 seconds remaining on the clock.

"It was an entertaining game to say the least," Pack said. "We'll need to play well against New Richland because we don't match up with them at all, and I think they can say the same about us."

Hayfield met NRHEG in the finals of the Rebel Classic Saturday night. Final-round results of the tournament will be in Monday's edition of the Herald.
