The construction of Austin's Packer Arena and Riverside Arena renovations continue to be on schedule.

According to city engineer Jon Erichson, a date for an official opening of the facility has not been set and the decision will depend on how long it takes to make the ice.

"We're looking to be done early December," Erichson said. Starting Dec. 16, the ice will be available for rent to groups.

Austin hockey players and figure skaters will be able to use the 35,000-square-foot facility during the winter months, in addition to the Riverside Arena. The new sheet of ice will provide more time for ice skaters, given that the current availability at the Riverside Arena is shared by several groups.

The project, which began six months ago, is being done in conjunction with renovations to Riverside Arena for a total of $3.6 million.
