Hayfield humbled by Winona Cotter, 39-20

The Hayfield Vikings football team dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in the Hiawatha Valley League's Blue Division after Friday's 39-20 homecoming loss to Winona Cotter.

The Rambles' Pat Leaf scored four touchdowns, including a 54-yard punt return in the fourth quarter that put the game out of Hayfield's reach. Cotter scored 18 points in the fourth quarter to counter Hayfield's comeback try of 14 points.

Vikings' running back James O'Connor rushed 33 times of 164 yards and all three Hayfield touchdowns.

O'Connor carried in from distances of 3, 1 and 4 yards for Hayfield's scores.

Leaf led Cotter to the early lead on a 1-yard touchdown run, to which Hayfield responded with O'Connor's first of three touchdown runs. Cotter scored twice in the third quarter to open a 21-6 lead, and three consecutive touchdowns by the Ramblers broke it open in the fourth.

Leaf caught a pair of touchdown passes from Matt DeMarais, scoring from 11 and 60 yards away.

Hayfield hammered out 209 rushing yards but was limited to just 58 through the air.

Cotter's touted passing attack racked up 211 of the Ramblers' 325 total yards.

Hayfield hosts Pine Island (2-4, 1-2) Friday night in HVL action.
