Hayfield hammers North

The Hayfield volleyball team picked up one win in four matches Saturday at the Rochester Century Tournament held at the National Volleyball Center.

The Vikings defeated Minneapolis North, 15-0, 15-1, in the final round of pool play after back-to-back defeats handed down by Big Nine Conference opponents Faribault and Rochester Mayo.

In the game for fifth place, Rochester Lourdes downed the Vikings 12-15, 15-7, 15-10.

"We did a good job of blocking the much taller Eagles," said Hayfield coach Deb Harvey.

Erin Gulbransen served Hayfield to leads of 6-0 in the first game and 3-0 in the second. The Vikings' season record went to 4-13 overall while remaining 1-5 in the Hiawatha Valley League. Hayfield goes to Rochester Lourdes tonight in HVL action.

For the tournament, Gulbransen led the entire team with 30 service points -- half of which were against Lourdes. She had 13 ace serves and also tabbed 33 set assists.

Middle hitter Lauren Burmeister led Hayfield with 18 kills. Kristen Kaczmarek tallied 15 kills and seven blocks, which co-led with Alyssa Nelson's seven blocks. Tara Kramer paced the Vikings with 18 digs, and Burmeister added 16 digs.
