Packer swimmers slam Spartans

The winnings ways returned Austin's way as the Packer girls' swimming and diving team doused Rochester Mayo, 94-84, in their Big Nine Conference opener Tuesday night at Ellis Middle School in Austin.

The Packers won nine of 12 events -- including four top-three sweeps -- and cinched up the meet victory during the eighth event. Of Austin's three swimmers in every individual event, only once were no points earned for a sixth-place finish.

Austin dominated from the start with the 200 medley relay victory. Briana Walsh, Cassie Srock, Nicole Novak and Lauren Goettsch set the pace for the rest of the evening's events by winning with five seconds to spare.

Lindsay Lukes and Chrissy Srock went 1-2 in the 200 freestyle, and the Packers swept the 200 individual medley. Stacy Bjorlie, Novak and Walsh went 1-2-3 to spur Austin to a 35-11 lead.

Goettsch cruised to victory in the 50 freestyle and again in the 100. Amanda Martin and Jennifer Snyder followed in the 100 for a 1-2-3 Packer finish.

Bjorlie, Lukes and Chrissy Srock ran Austin to an 86-40 lead with a top-three finish in the 500 freestyle, and the 200 freestyle relay's rout in the ninth event pushed the Packers into victory lane.

Austin did not let up, sweeping the 100 backstroke with the win already in hand. Walsh, Janine Davis and Kali Temperly had more than four seconds cushion on the nearest Mayo swimmers.

The Spartans took their third and final triumph in the 100 breaststroke, but the Packers swam back for a 400 free relay victory. Bjorlie, Chrissy Srock, Lukes and Martin outran the competition from Mayo by 11 seconds.

The Austin diving team took nine of 16 points available in the diving competition. Danielle Chapek, Jori Baldus and Shannon Doyle went 2-3-4 to keep Austin on track to win every event on the scoreboard. Mayo's Kathryn Lewallen edged Chapek for first by four points, 230.65 to 226.30.

The Packers (1-1, 1-0) hope to avenge their only loss from a year ago when they travel to Faribault Thursday night at 6 p.m.
