Riverland men have instant success at national tennis tournament

The Riverland men's tennis team had a little more luck that the women's squad during the first day at the National Junior College Tournament, finising 1-4 in first-round matches Monday at Collin County Community College in Plano, Texas.

The Blue Devil men got a doubles victory from their No. 2 pairing of Andy Stouvenel and Eddie Mjoen. Stouvenel and Mjoen defeated Michael Chan and Lance Ditzenberger of Hartford CC in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Mjoen and Stouvenel play their quarterfinal match today at 11 a.m. against the top-seeded duo in the second flight, Chris Gaynor and Gian Mira from the College of DuPage.

Paul Jacobsen and Brian Elwer got beat in their opening-round doubles match, a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Chase Lotfi and Curtis Whitcoff, also from DuPage. At No. 3 doubles, Curt Peterson and Todd Christopherson were blanked by Jordan Kovacev and Patrick Mehlek of Onondaga, 6-0, 6-0.

Jacobsen and Elwer were the only two to play singles matches on Monday, and both resulted in Riverland losses. Jacobsen fell 6-2, 6-4, to Matt Farrell of SUNY-Delhi, while Elwer lost 6-1, 6-1, to Lotfi.

Second-day play began this morning with the accompanying schedule.
