Packer girls#039; golfers improve by five strokes

Not even wind gusts of 30-40 miles per hour could prevent the Packer girls' golf team from taking their Big Nine Conference dual with Mankato East Tuesday at the Austin Country Club.

As the temperatures continued to rise in the area, Austin's team score dropped five strokes from a day earlier when the Packers beat Rochester Century. Brittany Bertilson claimed meet medalist honors with a round of 42-38--80.

"Brittany shot a great round, considering the wind and that the course has been under repair all spring," said coach Mark Anderson. "She stayed focused until the last putt hit the bottom of the cup."

Austin got a 90 from Claire Johnson, who on Monday beat Bertilson for medalist honors, 91s from Carissa Gabrielson and Andrea Petersen, and a 92 from Noelle Wiebelhaus.

Gabrielson's score of 91 was her career best.

"The girls have really stepped up their play this year," Coach Anderson said. "I was hoping they would respond like this and they have. They are a very determined bunch looking to succeed at every meet."

Austin (2-0) plays Saturday at the Hayfield Invite.
