Emma M. Skjeveland, 86
Emma Minnie Skjeveland, 86, of St. Ansgar, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage, Iowa.
She was born May 19, 1915, to Peter and Ida (White) Rasmussen in Worth County, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She received her education at Deer Creek No. 6 School.
On March 9, 1935, she married Clarence Gaylord Skjeveland at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, Iowa.
The couple farmed in the Manchester and Conger areas from 1935 until 1971. They attended Grace Lutheran Church in Alden. They retired to an acreage near Otranto, Iowa for about 18 years. They joined the Deer Creek Lutheran Church at Carpenter, Iowa.
Emma worked part-time at the lumberyard in Carpenter, Iowa for several years. In 1989, the couple moved to an apartment in St. Ansgar, Iowa where Emma lived until April 4, 2002, when she fell and broke her hip.
She enjoyed company and conversation, playing cards, family fishing trips, dancing and grandchildren.
Survivors include son, Charles (Kathy) Skjeveland, Cresco, Iowa; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and eight sisters.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at the funeral home.
Service: 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church near Carpenter, Iowa, with Rev. Kathy Larson officiating.
Interment: Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood, Iowa.

Milton Griffel, 82
Milton Fred Griffel, age 82, of Grand Meadow, died Saturday April 13, 2002, at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester.
He was born June 30, 1919, to Fred and Louise Griffel in Newell, Iowa. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith and later joined the Methodist Church. At 14, his father died and the family moved to Illinois. When they moved back, Milton started farming the land where he was born.
On Dec. 25, 1942, he married Vivian Seemann at her home near Grand Meadow. They returned to Milton's home and farmed with his family. They later moved to Ellsworth, Iowa and farmed. In 1950, they moved to the Grand Meadow area and bought the farm that Vivian grew up on. They farmed there until retiring in 1983.
Milton was a member of the Grand Meadow United Church and held offices on the church board and mens club. He was also a member of the Mower County Farm Bureau and held offices in the bureau. He enjoyed farming and his family.
Survivors include wife, Vivian, Grand Meadow; daughter, Carol (Wayne) Gehling, Grand Meadow; four grandchildren; sister, Alice Buhr, Momence, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sherilyn Kried; and one brother.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.
Service: 10 a.m., Wednesday, at the United Church of Grand Meadow with the Rev. Greg Strunk officiating.
Interment: Grand Meadow Cemetery.
