All three Austin area golfers are in the top 25 after the first day of the Class A state golf tournament at Izatys Golf and Yacht Club in Onamia.

LeRoy-Ostrander junior Erin Dohlman leads the way for area preps at the state meet. Dohlman, a returning state qualifier from a year ago, shot 44-45 – 89 to settle into a tie for 14th place after Thursday’s opening round of 18 holes.

Sammi Jones of Lyle/Pacelli, the first golfer from the school to go to the state meet, is tied for 20th after her day-one total of 48-47 – 95. Both Jones and Dohlman are chasing Mary Hasselberg of Staples-Motley/Pillager, who shot a 2-over-par round of 37-37 – 74 to take the lead after Thursday.

On the boys’ side, Southland-Grand Meadow junior Jeff Thalberg settled into a tie for 24th after the first day with a 47-48 – 95. Tournament leader Mike Pehler, an eighth-grader, from Rochester Lourdes shot 38-32 – 70. Lourdes also holds a commanding lead in the team standings after the first round.

State tournament play resumed this morning at 8:30 a.m. The boys play their tournament on the Black Brook course at Izatys, while the girls play on The Sanctuary.
