Packer girls win against Albert Lea

ALBERT LEA – Rhianna Jacobs scored two goals Saturday as the Austin Packers girls hockey team defeated the Tigers of Albert Lea on their home ice, 6-2.

ALBERT LEA – Rhianna Jacobs scored two goals Saturday as the Austin Packers girls hockey team defeated the Tigers of Albert Lea on their home ice, 6-2.

The first goal of the game came at 3:57 in the first period for Albert Lea, but it was matched at 13:26 with an unassisted goal by Jacobs, making the score 1-1.

In the second period, Melissa Dickhut scored an unassisted goal at 1:41, but it was matched at 2:48 by the Tigers on the power play, making the scored tied once again, at 2-2.

Courtney Hughes took the Packers back on top, 3-2, with a goal at 8:31 in the second; she was assisted by Jacobs. Then at 13:32, Jacobs collected her second unassisted goal.

The Packers had two more goals in the third period, the first on the power play from Jenny Nemitz and an assist from Dickhut. At 7:39, Jessica Petersen had an unassisted goal, making the final score 6-2.

Both the Packers and Tigers had six penalties in the game, as well as 24 shots on goal for both.

Kristine Swancutt had 22 saves between the pipes for the Packers.

"It was a pretty aggressive game," coach Denny Bray said. "Austin came out kind of slow in the first period, but they picked it up in the second and third.

"The girls skated well," he said.

Austin next takes on Winona at Riverside Arena at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
