While looking for the biggest, plumpest turkey, it’s easy to forget that not everyone in Austin will enjoy a feast at the holidays.

For some, the holidays are not a joyous occasion, but simply another day to struggle to make ends meet and provide necessities and maybe a couple of desires to their family.

Surely, in this season of giving, it bares reminding that there are those less fortunate who can enjoy a happier holiday with the help of the community.

There’s plenty of ways to help other members of the community have a happier holiday season.

Of course, the Salvation Army’s kettle drive is evident throughout the city.

Next time you see one, dig the change out of your pocket. Or better yet, throw in some cash.

The contributions go to fund activities throughout the year.

There are tags on Christmas trees at OakPark Mall and several of the shops in town, giving generous members of the community the opportunity to provide gifts for area youths.

Mower County churches undoubtedly have their food and fund drives to support those less fortunate both within the body of the church and in the whole community.

Of course, area service organizations also accept donations that will be put to good use in the community.

Cash donations are not the only way to help the less fortunate in the community. Volunteers are needed to ring the bells, organize church efforts and man the desks and phones.

There’s plenty of opportunities for members of the community to help out others during this holiday season.

Remember, need knows no season.
