American Legion SPAM Post No. 570 is helping the Austin Area Veterans Council.

The post donated $100 and several gifts for the council members to distribute to needy veterans’ families at Christmastime.

Norraine Handke, commander of the post, presented the check for $100 and the gifts to Thelma Peterson, president of the Austin Area Veterans Council, on Wednesday.

The post members held a meeting at Jerry’s Other Place restaurant and made the presentation to the council’s commander, Peterson.

SPAM Post No. 570 women veterans belong to the oldest established American Legion post of its kind in Minnesota. The post was formed in 1946 and claims 15 members today.

According to Peterson, the council’s members will pack Christmas baskets for distribution to needy veterans’ families in Mower County on Dec. 21 at the Austin American Legion Post.
