Victims Javier Herrera, 30, and Miguel Rubio, 20, were part of a group of at least four men walking from a dance at the Knights of Columbus who claimed to have been attacked by a group of men who came out of the house at 106 Second St. NE. Descriptions varied, with Rubio claiming 10 people attacked them and Herrera claiming 20.

Police Chief Paul Philipp said it appeared that the violence was an extension of an earlier argument at the dance, but added that neither the victims nor the witnesses were very forthcoming with details.

Herrera was stabbed in the right midsection of the rib cage, where the knife struck a rib, which prevented the stabbing from being fatal. Herrera was found by police on Oakland Avenue East after he and friends called the dispatch center from Budget Oil, 501 Oakland Ave. East, to report the incident.

Rubio walked to a friend’s home at 403 Second St. SE after being stabbed twice, once to the left side, the other to the right upper rib cage just below the pectoral muscle. According to the police report, the renter indicated that Rubio stated he knew his attacker, but didn’t know his name. Rubio was unconscious when police reached the residence.

Police have one suspect in custody, Juan Perez, 29, who also goes by the name Jorge Ambriz. They are searching for another suspect or suspects who Philipp speculated could be the same person.

Herrera is listed in serious condition at Austin Medical Center. Rubio was transported to Methodist Hospital in Rochester. No condition report was available this morning.
