The Legion softball team could finally take the field with out getting their feet wet this weekend at Todd Park. In their first game action of the summer season the Legion took fourth place in the Austin tournament.
"For the first time playing together the team played real well," Austin coach Denny Bray said. "I don’t think we had an error until the fifth game. We turned a number of double plays including a 6-3-5, 7-6-5 and 6-2. It was a really good tournament."
On Saturday Austin went 2-1 in pool play. Austin beat Pepin 3-1 in the first game of the day. Amber Wilson struck out seven and walked just one while giving up six hits. Mel Gabrielson was 3-for-3.
Austin won its next game 11-1. Betsy Matheis was 3-for-3 with a triple in the contest. Waseca then beat Austin 1-0.
Austin started Sunday with a 3-1 win over Winona. Wilson who pitched every inning of every game for Austin tossed a one-hitter. Matheis hit a triple and Megan Olsen a double in the game.
Austin then lost 7-3 to St. Agnes. St. Agnes knocked out 15 hits and Austin committed five errors. The 11-hit Austin attack was led by Rhianna Jacobs who was 3-for-3 with a double. Olsen was 2-for-4 with a triple, Tiffany Poirier was 2-for-3 with a double, and Matheis was 2-for-4.
In the third-place game, Austin was no hit and fell to Pepin 4-0.
