This morning, Austin’s Public School Board had to cut jobs in order to make ends meet.
The board had to cut jobs where it hurts the most - in classrooms.
In an effort to trim back nearly $800,000, cuts were made of long term substitutes – four of them; to two tenured teachers, and 18 probationary teachers.
Every school in this district has pledged to lower class sizes, but that’s going to be difficult with reduced teaching staffs. Let’s hope that these are the last cuts in teaching this district ever has to see.
Our children deserve reasonable class sizes, and teachers they can count on having around. Let us hope the school district learns from this latest round of belt-tightening and can give us a better outlook for the future.
