The apparent disappearance of a citizen’s band radio from a box in a locked display case is being investigated as a possible theft.
Austin police were summoned to Watts Cookin’ and Catering restaurant and convenience store at the Citgo Truck Stop near the 11th Street NE exist off Interstate 90 early Tuesday morning.
According to an Austin Police Department report, an employee of the convenience and gift store reported a man entered the business near 2:40 a.m. Tuesday and inquired if anyone had found a driver’s license.
Told that none had been found, the man went upstairs to the truckers’ lounge and then returned to the lower level moments later.
He went to a display case and asked the clerk about a CB radio. Satisfied, he made the purchase of $127 and left the business.
Minutes later, according to the police report, he returned and angrily told the clerk he opened the box to examine the CB radio he had purchased only to find magazines stuffed inside.
The man demanded his money back.
The clerk called a supervisor and Austin police.
When police questioned him, the man said he was a trucker identified as Douglas Doeden of Rushmore and he contended there was no radio in the box when he examined it in his truck.
Police searched Doeden’s truck and found no CB radio.
The magazines inside the box were similar to those in the truckers’ lounge.
The business refunded Doeden’s money and he left driving off into the night.
According to police, the incident remains under investigation and surveillance cameras in the business will be reviewed.
