Gary Ellingson is the lone applicant of the moment for the Second Ward council seat left vacant by Todd Penske.

Penske stepped down from the Austin City Council two weeks ago when it became clear that his business’s transactions with the city for land would put him in a situation of conflicted interests.

Ellingson is retired, and was the chief deputy of the Mower County Sheriff’s Department.

Ellingson applied for this same seat with Penkse when it opened following the election of Dick Chaffee to the council member-at-large seat.

Ellingson also ran against Gary Nemitz for his position as a member of the county Board of Commissioners.

Applications may be picked up and turned in at the city offices until Jan. 10. Applicants will be interviewed, and an appointment announced by the mayor shortly thereafter.
