There was more to come. Broviak’s TD made it 14-0. The Mustangs carried on to ruin Lyle-Pacelli’s celebration of the first Lyle football team with a 35-14 stampede.

"They’re the best team," Lion coach Mark Buntje said matter-of-factly. "I know Alden-Conger beat them in the first game, but they’re big – Did you see how big they were? – and they have three guys that can run the ball."

The Mustangs rolled up 391 yards of offense and scored 31 second-quarter points in the nine-man football game.

Broviak, a straight-ahead-rushing string bean, carried 16 times for 104 of the team’s 304 rushing yards.

But the Mustang’s dominance was tempered by 16 penalties for a whopping 153 yards – testament to a bickering, push-and-shove game.

GHECML (2-1) followed Broviak’s TD with a 38-yard touchdown run by Mortensen and a 35-yard blast by Kevin Brockmann, a 6-foot, 2-inch, 170-pound ram. Brockmann scoring run was the first play following a Lyle-Pacelli fumble and made it 27-0 in the second quarter.

Brockmann finished with 96 yards on eight carries; Mortensen 83 on 12 keepers.

The Lions scored before the half on a 32-yard pitch-and-catch from Jason Helgeson to a 6-5 target, tight end Philip Halbach. Helgeson threw the TD pass after taking the ball on a reverse. Josh Kunze passed to Jared Koopal for the two-point conversion and the Lions trailed 27-8.

But the Mustangs responded with a drive capped by a 1-yard TD pass from Mortensen to Greg Manday, making it 35-8.

Lyle-Pacelli added another score late in the game against the Mustang’s B-squad. Chris Maly capped a 65-yard drive with a 7-yard dive.

Lyle-Pacelli (1-2) was led by senior Josh Kunze, who rushed 11 times for 44 yards and caught four passes for 30 yards.

Lion QB Dan Greibrok threw two interceptions, finishing 7-for-17 for 39 yards. Maly carried eight times for 26 yards.

Ben Mattick led the Lion defense with seven solo tackles and two assists. Kunze and Cole Hastings both registered six tackles.

At halftime, the crowd was treated to a ceremony in honor of the first Lyle football team. The 1942 Lions played six-man football and finished 3-3 after winning their first three ball games.
