The Lyle/Pacelli tennis team won its first match of the year at the Riverland tennis courts Monday. They defeated Shattuck/St. Mary’s 5-2.

"The win was a good confidence booster for Lyle/Pacelli," coach Suzy Hebrink said.

It took a couple of games for Sammy Jones in her No. 1 singles match to warm up, but once she did she made all her shots and went on to a 6-2, 6-0 win.

Lyle/Pacelli’s No. 2 singles player Laura Christopherson was on and off the court in a flash losing only one game dismantling her opponent with her big serve.

The top two doubles teams for Lyle/Pacelli used their power to pickup wins. Erin Evans and Laura Wiechmann at No. 2 doubles, were among the more powerful on the day, also losing only one game. Buffy Judd and Tammy May were a little erratic with their games, but they eventually controlled their power and went on to a three-set win.

At No. 3 doubles, Lyle/Pacelli’s Christina Edstrom and Ilsa Burke were the superior duo on the court. They won in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.

The coach’s daughter, fifth-grader Annie, has gained some nice experience this year even though she is ineligible to play. She has played a couple home matches this year against the Lyle/Pacelli’s No. 4 singles opponent. Because she is ineligible the matches don’t count. It really didn’t matter on Monday anyway because Shattuck/St. Mary’s is not a member of the Minnesota State High School League. Hebrink won 6-1, 6-4.

Tina Rosenthal played two matches Monday. At No. 3 singles she lost 6-1, 6-1 to Renie Ikeda. In a junior varsity match she defeated Markie Berenger 8-0 in a pro set.

Lyle/Pacelli next takes the court on Thursday in Rochester against the Stewartville Tigers.
