The Hayfield girls basketball team opened its season on a strong note as it beat Minneota (2-1 overall) 70-60 on the road Friday.

Olivia Matti had 18 points and eight rebounds to lead the Vikings (1-0 overall) and Maggie Streightiff added 16 points and eight rebounds.

“Minneota’s a very good, tough team and they have a tough post and it was their third game so they had their kinks worked out,” Hayfield co-head coach Kasey Krekling said. “We came out and took the lead and we hit some shots.”
