Big game for the big men: Austin pounds the paint in win over Byron

ROCHESTER — The top-seeded Austin boys basketball team didn’t put forth a perfect effort, but it did enough to get the job done and move on in a 66-48 win over No. 4 Byron in a Section 1AAA semifinal game in Mayo Civic Center Saturday.

The Packers (26-2 overall) struggled with turnovers down the stretch and they connected on just five three-pointers, but their senior post players dominated inside in the win. Kyle Oberbroeckling racked up 19 points and seven rebounds, Pat Hagan had eight points, seven rebounds and three steals and Oman Oman had seven points, five rebounds and four assists.

“That’s why Kyle starts and plays a lot for us. He had a lot of nice plays and he did a lot of things for us,” Austin head coach Kris Fadness said. “Pat had a nice game and Oman was pretty much Oman. We like our inside game, it’s just that usually our three guards dominate the ball a lot.”

The Packers jumped out to a 13-2 lead and Oberbroeckling scored the first six points of the game for Austin. He was able to get to the hoop and make plays off of dishes from Both Gach, who compiled 13 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals.

“I think Both and the point guards found me and Hagen when the time was right,” Oberbroeckling said. “We converted with easy baskets. When I set a ball screen, the defense goes to Both and he hits me with the pass. It’s a good combo.”

Both picked his spots to be aggressive on offense, but he spent much of the day acting as a facilitator to set up the Austin big men inside.

“I was looking for them coming off the screens. It was an advantage for us,” Both said. “We want to go inside out instead of shooting threes right away.”

While they never trailed after tying the game at 2-2, the Packers did struggle with consistency when it built up big leads. Byron pulled as close as 20-15 after falling behind early on and Austin led 52-31 in the second half, only to have the Bears (16-12 overall) crawl back to within 58-45.

Fadness is hoping the Packers can keep up the intensity throughout the game when they play No. 2 Northfield in the Section 1AAA title game in Mayo Civic Center 6 p.m. Friday.

“My frustration is with the fact that the kids have to understand that there’s no tomorrow if we lose and they have to play every possession,” Fadness said. “I was getting a little frustrated at times with guys jogging on the wings and being a little slow to get places. We took some possessions off and you can’t do that defensively if you want to get to the next level.”

The Packers beat Northfield (17-11 overall) 68-60 Jan. 6 and Austin beat the Raiders 61-47 Feb. 14. Gach said the Packers will be locked in on preparing for the game this week, which will be the first time Austin has played in a Section 1AAA title game since 2013.

“Our focus is to keep getting better, have a good week of practice and be ready for Friday,” he said.
