Austin natives return as guest artists for ASO’s ‘Remembrance’

Austin natives who distinguished themselves in music will return to their hometown to be guest artists in the Austin Symphony Orchestra’s “Remembrance” at  2 p.m. Sunday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

The performance will feature guest violinist Richard Roberts, concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. The Austin Symphony Chorus, also appearing, will welcome guest vocalists Thomas Gerber, a baritone, and soprano Mandie Siems.

The orchestra will be conducted by Stephen J. Ramsey. Sonia Larson directs the chorus.

Roberts serves as concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Eight years prior to this appointment, he was assistant concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra under conductor Lorin Maazel.

He received his early training with Norman Carol and, at 17, made his soloist debut with the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra. His studies took him to Indiana University where he studied violin with Josef Gingold and chamber music with Janos Starker and William Primrose. He has appeared in solo and chamber music recitals worldwide and has appeared with many prominent orchestras.

He has served on the faculties of the University of Minnesota, the Cleveland Institute and the Conservatoire de Musique du Quebec.

While performing with the ASO, he will be featured in “Violin Concerto” by Mendelssohn

The joint orchestra and chorus will present, “Requiem,” by Gabriel Faust, featuring Gerber and Siems.

Gerber is the director of music at Bishop England High School in Charleston, South Carolina has had a variety of experiences both as choir and operatic singer. He holds a degree from Luther College, where he studied with Weston Noble, Allen Hightower, and Edwin Andereck. He lives in Charleston.

Siems is a familiar voice in Austin, having appeared in many musical productions and as soloist in Handel’s “Messiah” in 2015. She has performed in the Austinaires, Minnesota Music Educators’ All-State Choir and with ASO. She works for public affairs at Mayo Clinic Health System.

Ramsey is in his 22nd year as music director and conductor of ASO. He is founder and conductor of the Dakota Valley Symphony in Burnsville, Minnesota. He also conducts two other groups: the Health Sciences Orchestra of the University of Minnesota, and the Willmar Area Symphony Orchestra.
