ROCHESTER — The Hayfield girls basketball team mixed strong defense, pin-point shooting and a lot of depth to come up with an 85-35 win over Southland in the HVL-TRC Showdown in Mayo Civic Center Friday.

The Vikings (6-1 overall) won their sixth straight game and they reached double digits in three-pointers made for the second straight game as they connected on 10 three-pointers. Six players scored at least eight points in the win for Hayfield.

“I was surprised we shot that well here, because it’s tough to shoot in this gym,” Hayfield co-head coach Kasey Krekling said. “We wanted to learn how to play here and get used to winning here, because hopefully we’ll be playing here again.”

The Vikngs scored the first 11 points of the game and they held a 42-7 lead late in the first half. Sophia Waldner, a senior, racked up eight points, six rebounds and six assists for Hayfield, which kept pushing the pace with their depth.

“It makes it fun when you get in a groove with your team. We just keep pushing the ball and we don’t slow down,” Waldner said. “We improve every day and it’s not easy in practice. We have a lot of good girls to compete against.”

Olivia Matti had 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals for Hayfield, Kate Kruger had eight points, six rebounds and five assists, and Emma Holst hit three three-pointers and she scored 11 points off the bench.

Krekling said Hayfield’s depth has been a strength as the team has a big sophomore and junior class.

“If you come to one of our practices, you know how intense it is in practice because sometimes our second group takes it to our first group and that’s what you want as a coach,” Krekling said. “It shows on our bench and we don’t let up very much.”

The Rebels (2-5 overall) were led by Kaysie Allen, who had nine points. Southland has now dropped five straight games after it won its first two contests of the season.

“We’ve been working hard to get everyone on the same page and get everyone involved and that kind of went out the door tonight,” Southland head coach Dean Bendtsen said. “I’m giving [Hayfield] a lot of credit. They executed nicely and the buzz saw started for us in the first minute of the first half. Hayfield can really play some ball and they had it working on all cylinders tonight.”
