Seat belt violations were down this year, but child seat citations took a jump according to results from this year’s Click It or Ticket campaign from Oct. 14-30.

Law enforcement agencies from around the state totaled 4,351 seat belt citations, down by over 1,000 from 2015’s total of 5,550. However, child seat citations reached 166 which was up from 128 the year before.

The Austin Police Department registered 11 seat belt citations while the Mower County Sheriff’s Department had two seat belt citations. Neither agency recorded child seat citations.

This year’s campaign feature 312 law enforcement agencies.

Throughout the state during that time period there were 28 traffic fatalities and of those fatalities, nine were not wearing seat belts.

The extra overtime shifts also resulted in a number of other arrests and citations for offenses including DWI, drug possession, speeding and texting-while-driving.

The enhanced enforcement and education efforts are coordinated through the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety (DPS-OTS) with overtime paid through federal funds received from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
