Betty L. Johnson, 89 of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at her home.

Betty Lien was born on Nov. 27, 1926, in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, the daughter of Edward and Lula (Rowbotham) Lien. She grew up on the family farm. Following her graduation from Blooming Prairie High School, Betty attended Austin Teacher’s College. In addition to teaching, she worked as a bookkeeper, most recently at Austin Veterinary Clinic before retiring in 1988. On November 28, 1951, she was united in marriage to Richard D. Johnson in Mason City, Iowa. The couple made their home in Austin, belonged to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and raised three children. Betty loved jigsaw puzzles and games. She also enjoyed bingo, bowling, and socializing with friends and family.

Survivors include her children Rick (Chris) Johnson of Eagan, Minnesota, Jill (Michael) Novak of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Sue (Reggie) Smart of Ham Lake, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Nick and Kerry; three great-grandchildren, Xavier, Felix, and Julia; her sister Leota Dugstad of Lake City, Minnesota; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Betty was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Lula Lien, her husband Richard in 2010, her sister Virginia ‘Ginger’ Cashman and her brother Marvin Lien.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 16, 2016, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor Karen Behling officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is assisting the family with arrangements.
