Austin senior Shayley Vesel signed her national letter-of-intent to play basketball and softball with an athletic scholarship for North Iowa Area Community College at Austin High School Wednesday.

NIACC is a Division II NJCAA school located in Mason City, Iowa.

Vesel, who has made the adjustment from shortstop to catcher for the Packers this season, so she’ll bring plenty of versatility to NIACC. She had also looked at UW-La Crosse, University of St. Mary’s and RCTC, but Vesel said that she didn’t want to pick just one sport. She’ll have a chance to pursue basketball and softball at NIACC.

“I thought NIACC was the best choice athletic-wise and academic-wise,” Vesel said. “I’ve been thinking about it for a long time and I didn’t want to pick between basketball and softball.”

Vesel is a four-year varsity player in basketball, softball and volleyball for the Packers. She is on the 1,000 point club for the basketball team and she averaged 17.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game this past season. In softball, Vesel hit .338 with 13 RBIs as a junior and she will play in the Minnesota All Star series in June.

The NIACC women’s basketball team finished 23-12 overall this last season and the NIACC softball team finished 20-31 overall.

“The program is great, their coaches are great and I’m excited to play there,” Vesel said.
