“Where has the time gone?”

A question often uttered by parents and families as they reflect on their children’s lives and the feeling of them growing up too fast. Transitions for our children can seem overwhelming due to the rapid changes and new demands related to their social, emotional and academic experiences. This year, I.J. Holton staff continues to work with families as part of the Parent Leadership Team, to identify key components in supporting parent-child-school relationships to grow successful students.

A primary focus has been the development of meaningful opportunities for families to have fun and learn together. Several family nights included parents engaging in an introduction to technology-based academic resources that support their child’s math, reading, social studies and science course work. A Family Engineering Night provided interactive learning experiences, with a focus on the design process and STEM applications. Most recently, a Family Game Night promoted a fun and playful atmosphere to explore some classic board games, as well as be introduced to some new favorites. In the end, the goal of the family nights is to set aside the time to do something together. Creating a routine that includes intentional family time is an excellent avenue for maintaining and promoting positive relationships with our children through transitions.

Additional family events are aimed at increasing understanding about standardized testing, school and home academic supports, social-emotional skills and student safety related to technology. Looking ahead, we are seeking family input to design events based on interests and concerns.

As we move through the second half of the school year and start preparing for next year, take the time to ask your child questions related to their next transition. The best advice is to listen, be proactive and problem solve together. Strive to keep a positive attitude and try to empathize by recalling your emotions and experiences at their age.

Many opportunities will be available to familiarize your family and child with I.J. Holton in the upcoming months. Be sure to watch for information coming home with your child, as well as information shared through Parent Portal and school websites.
