MINNEAPOLIS —Austin senior Rachel Quandt is no stranger to the state meet and she played a big role in helping the Packers take fourth at the Class A state team gymnastics meet at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis Friday.

Quandt, who has been on Austin’s team for all of its five consecutive straight trips, made her final high school gymnastics meet count as she gave the Packers a boost in three events. She had an 8.5 on the floor, an 8.60 on the vault and a 7.8 on the bars.

“We’ll miss Rachel. I was really happy for her today,” Austin head coach Nikki Lindberg said. “She had one of her best meets.”

Detroit Lakes won the meet with a 150.225, but the Packers were within a tenth of a point of third place as Becker had a team score of 144.325. Melrose took third with a 147.025.

Austin had 11 event scores of a 9.0 or better and the Packers had four gymnasts score a 9.0 or better on the floor.

“We started well on floor and we kept the energy up going through the meet,” Quandt said. “Consistency is key. You have to keep your attitude up. One thing doesn’t determine the whole thing and you have to pick it up on the next event.”

Junior Paige Raymond gave the Packers a strong all-around performance as she put put a 9.25 on the floor, an 8.8 on the vault, an 8.425 on the bars and an 8.85 on the beam.

“We weren’t really focusing on places coming into the meet,” Raymond said. “We wanted to have a good score and that’s what we did.”

The Packers made the biggest strides towards a solid finish when they fell just once on the beam.

“Beam is the make or break event and today we made it,” Quandt said.

Austin’s two individual state qualifiers — Maddie Mullenbach and Jennifer Boyle — had big days on Friday as well. Mullenbach scored at least a 9.35 in all four events and Boyle had a 9.2 or better in three of her events.

The individual state meet will take place 11 a.m. Saturday at the Sports Pavilion.
