ST. PAUL Councilors in Minnesota’s capital plan to vote on a resolution this week that says Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump isn’t welcome in St. Paul.

The proposed resolution before the City Council denounces Trump over his recent anti-Muslim statements. Trump wants to bar Muslims from entering the country.

Council member Dai Thao says they may not have authority to stop Trump from visiting, but the resolution will send a strong message that “bigotry isn’t accepted here.”

A Star Tribune editorial Tuesday says the resolution goes too far and that free speech is a constitutional right, no matter how much that speech might be loathed.

Minnesota is home to the largest Somali population in the United States.
