The State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating a house fire just after 3 p.m. Friday afternoon that claimed one life.

The Austin Fire Department were dispatched around 3:10 p.m. to a fire at a residence in the 2100 block of 16th Street SE. En route firefighters were informed of a possible subject still in the house.

“Crews attempted to gain entry, but were pushed out,” said Austin Fire Chief. “They tried a different door, were able to knock the fire down and found the victim and brought the victim out.”

McCoy said the subject was deceased by that time.

Both the fire and what caused the death are still undetermined. McCoy said the State Fire Marshal’s office will be back to continue the investigation.

As of Saturday the name of the subject was still being withheld.

“As soon as the autopsy is complete and the family is notified, we’ll release the name and cause of death,” McCoy said.
