Football: Superlarks will look to stop the option

GRAND MEADOW — Last week the Grand Meadow football team had to focus on stopping a quarterback that could beat them with his arm. This week, they’ll have to hold back a quarterback who can beat them with his legs.

The Superlarks (12-0 overall) are preparing to see plenty of read option looks as they prepare to play Waubun (11-0 overall) in the Class 9 man state football semifinals in St. Cloud State University 5 p.m. Saturday.

The Bombers rely a lot on the running of junior quarterback Peyton Syverson, who is small but speedy and quick.

“This week we need to be very disciplined,” GM head coach Gary Sloan said. “They’ve got a very good quarterback and they run the option out of a lot of different formations. We just have to make sure we have people in the right position so we can try and avoid him getting any long runs against us.”

Offensively, the Larks will do what they always do — try to establish the run to set up the pass. Sloan said the team is using most of the week to focus on defense and stopping Syverson.

Like it has quite often in the past few years, GM is hoping to strike first on Saturday.

“We like to try and make people chase us,” Sloan said. “If we can get them down a touchdown or two touchdowns, you get them to make mistakes and that always works to your advantage.”

The winner of Saturday’s game will play Underwood or Ely in the Class 9 man state football championship in TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis 10 a.m. Nov. 13.
