Riverside Arena is going to have an ice rink in time for the fall.

Construction on a $1.4 million renovation of the Riverside Arena is on schedule, according to Public Works Director Steven Lang.

Workers poured concrete floor onto the rink Thursday, which completed a key part of the project. All of the new tubing, insulation and other systems were previously installed below the rink.

The concrete needs 28 days to cure before city staff can put in ice.

“This was a critical piece in the construction schedule,” Lang said.

Workers will install chillers, dehumidification and other cooling equipment over the next few weeks.

Much of the original equipment at Riverside is getting replaced this summer. Constructed in 1983, the building hadn’t had a large-scale renovation until this year.

The city’s construction window was shorter than normal, as the Austin Bruins hockey team needs the ice when it starts games in the fall.
