A 25-year-old Austin man faces serious charges after he allegedly led police on a drunken chase through Austin and nearly got himself seriously injured.

Police Chief Brian Krueger said the suspect ran a stop sign at 14th Street and Eighth Avenue Northwest at about 3:48 a.m. Wednesday when officers tried to pull him over. He led police through northwest Austin before he drove onto Interstate 90, exited at Sixth Street Northeast, and tried to escape in the neighborhood west of the Hormel Foods Corp. Corporate North Office.

Officers stopped him at Third Street and 17th Avenue Northeast, but the driver got out of his car and walked toward officers without listening to their commands, according to Krueger. The driver refused to show his hands and at one point pointed his fingers at police.

An officer pinned the suspect against a vehicle via a shoulder tackle and held him at taser-point until backup arrived. Police arrested the suspect on felony fleeing charges and took him to the Mower County jail, where he refused a DWI test.

The suspect’s passenger and a pit bull were released from the scene.

Krueger praised the officers responding and said no one was hurt during the incident.

“People need to respond to police commands,” he said. “When you’ve got a suspect who was inebriated, that makes it sometimes harder to listen.”
