The Austin U18 softball team wrapped up its regular season as it split a doubleheader with Blooming Prairie-New Richland-HEG in Todd Park Tuesday.

BPNR had just eight players, which left a gap in right field, but Austin wasn’t able to exploit that until the second game.

“We’ve struggled with slow pitching all year,” Austin assistant coach Will Pazurek said. “They’re not waiting for it and then they hit in the air for a pop up. We just didn’t manufacture any runs. In the second game we bounced back and everybody was hitting it.”

Jaidyn Bastian pitched six total innings for Austin as she struck out 12 and allowed just two hits on the day. Bastian was also 3-for-3 with two RBIs in the nightcap. She had two of those hits and two RBIs in a fifth inning that saw Austin score nine runs.

Abby Gogolewski, who had an inside the park homer in the second inning, launched a two-run homer over the center field fence to get Austin’s fifth inning rally going.

“It was a good flow. Gogo had a good hit and that got us going for a good rally,” Bastian said. “I think we were rushing every throw in the first game, but we learned from our mistakes and we had a good second game.”

Austin will host the MSF state softball tournament and it will play at 10:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. at Todd Park Saturday.
