ST. PAUL — It was the last high school run for McKenzie Kirtz of GMLOKS and she made it count.

Kirtz finished off her final prep track and field season with a personal best time in the 1600-meter run and a seventh place finish at the Minnesota Class A state track and field meet. Kirtz ran the 1600 in 5:10.11.

Kirtz, who has competed in four state track and field meets, plans on running track and field and cross country at UW-La Crosse next season, but she was a little emotional about Saturday being her last state meet.

“I have such mixed emotions,” she said. “I just thank God for always giving me a chance to improve myself and always strive for something greater. I’m going to miss my coaches, teammates, family and all of the support. I’ll have new adventures next year in college and I’m looking forward to that.”

Kayla Huhnerkoch of Redwood Valley won the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:56.21. Kirtz was pleased were she finished in the 16-runner race.

“My goal was to get up on that stand and I’m always trying to improve my time,” Kirtz said.
