The Austin Post 91 Legion baseball team committed three errors, but it was able to cruise past Owatonna Post 77 6-1 in Marcusen Park Thursday.

Austin (4-1 overall) scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning when Jake Reinartz and Jacob Kempen drew back-to-back two out RBI walks and Isaac Schumacher gave Austin a big cushion when he hammered a two-run single into right field to make it a 5-0 game.

Austin had struck out six times in the first two innings.

“It’s always good to get a win no matter how pretty or ugly it is. A win is a win. We’ll take it and we’ll improve on it,” Schumacher said. “After my horrendous first at bat where I swung at three balls, I wanted to take a patient approach [on my third inning at bat] and I saw a nice hanging breaking ball and went for it.”

Austin’s Nik Gasner picked up the win on the mound as he allowed two hits, four walks and zero earned runs in five innings. Schumacher came in and allowed just one baserunner in the last two innings.

“I think Nik would be the first one to say he wasn’t really on tonight,” Post 91 co-head coach Joe Kroc said. “He fell behind a lot of guys and his pitch count was a little high, but he hasn’t really thrown extended for about a month. It’s to be expected, but hopefully next time out he can do better. Schumacher was lights out again filling out the strike zone.”

Post 91 has started the season off on a strong note and the team is playing with confidence every game. Schumacher said the team comes out looking to win every game.

“We’re going in every game knowing we are the favorite to win,” he said. “I don’t think there’s a better team in our District than us. We’re going in with a target on our back and I think we’re living up the challenge.”
