HAYFIELD — The conditions were far from ideal and hits were hard to come by, but the Hayfield baseball team found just enough offense to edge out Blooming Prairie 4-2 in Hayfield Tuesday.

Rain fell through much of the game and both teams combined for a total of just six hits, but Hayfield’s Adam Younge had the biggest hit of the game when he came through with a two-out, two-run single to put the Vikings (9-3 overall) up 2-0 in the bottom of the second. Younge scored to make it 3-0 on a wild pitch.

“He threw me three straight balls and the first fast ball I saw, I kind of ripped it,” Younge said.

The Awesome Blossoms (4-10 overall) crept to within 3-2 when John Rumpza had RBI singles in the third and fifth innings, but BP stranded six runners on base over the last three innings of the game.

Rumpza allowed just three hits and he walked four for BP (4-10 overall) in six innings, while Cam Rutlege allowed two hits and eight walks in five innings, while striking out nine for the Vikings. Hayfield’s Andrew Becker pitched out of a jam in the sixth inning by getting three straight BP hitters out when the tying run was in scoring position.

“The mound was a slip and slide a little bit,” Hayfield head coach Kasey Krekling said. “I thought Cam did a good job of battling threw and I thought Rumpza did a great job of keeping the ball low in the strike zone. He was battling too.”

After dropping a couple of games last week, the Vikings were eager to get going again this week. The team won Monday and Rutledge said not even Tuesday’s rain could put a damper on the team’s mood.

“Before the game we all had a good mindset going,” he said. “We want to win a bunch of games this week because we’re coming off an 0-2 week last week. We know some of the guys over there [in BP] and it’s always good to beat a team that’s down the road from you.”

Although BP came up short, head coach Matt Kittelson thought his team played much better than it did in a two lop-sided losses last week.

“I’m very happy with everything about the game,” he said. “John pitched a great game and we played a good, clean game. We kept fighting and it’s a much better performance than the last few games that we’ve had.”

If the Vikings were starting to feel down about playing in miserable conditions, their bench wasn’t going to let them stay down for long. Krekling said Hayfield’s dugout has been vibrant all season and he said that’s a good sign that the whole team is in it together.

“They are energetic. The bench gets into it which is nice,” Krekling said. “They don’t sit and sulk when they’re not playing, they really do into it and they really are a team.”
