Hormel Foods Corp. is cooking up a new development to house their research and development labs.

Hormel will build a new facility in Austin on 13.5 acres at 2207 and 2107 Eighth Drive NE, north of corporate north, for its microbiology and chemistry labs. A Hormel spokesman said construction will begin later this summer and will wrap up by 2016.

The Austin City Council approved rezoning the land for high-density multifamily and commercial use during a public meeting Monday night. It was previously rated for low-density housing.

Planning and Zoning Administrator Holly Wallace told the council the property’s new classification could allow for anything from multi-use housing to office space and other types of business.

The council also amended the city’s comprehensive policy to reflect the new property zoning.
