When the Hayfield baseball team popped up as the No. 14th ranked team in Class A in Wednesday’s polls, their head coach Kasey Krekling was a little worried it may make his team a little overconfident.

The Vikings proved worthy of that ranking when they went out and knocked off Kasson-Mantorville, which is ranked No. 6 in Class AA, 13-12 in Hayfield Thursday.

The Vikings (6-1 overall) now have two wins over ranked teams in Class AA.

“They’re starting to believe they are a good team,” Hayfield head coach Kasey Krekling said. “If we play our baseball we’re a good team. We kind of settled down today and played our game. Once they took the lead, they believed they were going to win.”

The KoMets (4-3 overall) jumped out to a 7-1 lead early on, but the Vikings went up 12-7 when they sent 12 hitters to the plate and scored seven runs in the bottom of the third. Hayfield’s No. 9 hitter Adam Younge had a big impact as he went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs.

The Vikings had four errors in the first three innings and they finished with six errors. KM had four errors.

“It was a little sloppy, but both teams hit the ball hard,” Krekling said.

Adam Fjerstad picked up a four-inning save as he held KM’s hard hitting lineup in check.
