A 20-year-old Rose Creek man is in jail after he allegedly caused more than $500 worth of damage to windows at the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center on Monday while he was drunk.

Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger said police responded to an alarm at the nature center at about 3:33 a.m. Monday. Officers found broken windows on the east and west side of the nature center’s visitor center.

Police searched the building using a K-9 unit and found the suspect, who was allegedly sitting at a desk with his feet propped up and his hands in the pockets of his hooded sweatshirt.

After they asked him several times to show his hands, officers used a K-9 to take the man into custody.

However, Krueger said the man initially showed no response when the dog bit him on the upper thigh.

Officers managed to handcuff the suspect with help from the K-9, who also bit the suspect on the ankle. Police discovered the man was quite drunk and transported him to Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin after the suspect refused treatment from Gold Cross Ambulance.

The suspect faces burglary, minor consumption and criminal damage to property charges. Krueger said the case has been forwarded to the Mower County Attorney’s office.
