Area law enforcement are warning residents not to fall for the latest phone scam — someone who claims to be from the IRS.

Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger said police have received multiple reports from concerned citizens who say someone reportedly from the IRS has called them. The suspect tells the victims they owe money to the IRS and if they don’t pay now, they’ll face steep penalties in the future.

The IRS does not make phone calls to people delinquent on their taxes.

“Do not send money or give them any important information over the phone,” Krueger said.
