Mabel N. Vaale, 89, of Austin, Minnesota, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015, at The Cedars of Austin.

Mabel Nora Helland was born Jan. 5, 1926, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Peder and Lula (Gephart) Helland. She graduated from Scarville High School in Iowa in 1943. On Nov. 16, 1946, Mabel and Russell Vaale were united in marriage at Lime Creek Lutheran Church near Emmons, Minnesota. They moved to Austin in 1948 and raised three daughters. Mabel was employed as a bookkeeper at St. Olaf Hospital (now Mayo Clinic Health System-Austin) from 1956-1978. A member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin and the Mower County Senior Center, she enjoyed spending her free time doing handiwork, especially knitting, crocheting and quilting. Mabel also enjoyed cooking and baking, playing cards and golfing. She and Russell wintered in Texas for 16 years.

Mabel is survived by her husband Russell Vaale of Austin; her three daughters: Carol (Bob) Bursby of Cumming, Georgia, Diane Vaale of Mableton, Georgia, and Jacqueline Vaale of St. Paul, Minnesota; four grandchildren: Michelle Olson, Corinne Lentine, Natalie Kelly, Andrew Wicklund; four great-grandchildren: Megan, Samantha, Nora, Casey; and her sister Mildred Benson of Evansdale, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents Peder and Lula Helland; and two brothers.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor Karen Behling officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 16, at the Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery, Austin, at a later date. Memorials can be directed to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin or the Mower County Senior Center. Services prearranged and performed by Worlein Funeral Home of Austin.
