Two Austin men were arrested early Sunday after leading police on a high-speed chase near Austin.

Austin Police Lt. Dave McKichen said the suspects, both 23, were taken into custody shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday near County Road 58 and 215th Street after police deflated their tires using spike strips.

The chase began when Mower County Sheriff’s deputies noticed a suspicious car driving along Eighth Street Northeast in Austin. The car didn’t slow after officers tried to pull it over, according to McKichen.

The suspects let a female passenger out of the car near the 28th Street exit by Interstate 90 and led officers on a chase for a few more minutes before they were brought down. McKichen said the suspects briefly drove near the Gerard Academy and the Austin Country Club, where Austin police were on an unrelated matter.

The men were taken to Mower County jail pending further charges.
