Myron and Betty Young

Betty Ann Harriet Madson was born Feb. 2, 1927, at her rural Fillmore County home to Howard and Anna (Morem) Madson. Her early education was spent in Fillmore County country school. The family eventually moved to Austin, where Betty graduated from Austin High School. She attended teacher’s training and became a teacher in 1946. Betty taught school in rural Mower County and then in the rural Oakland school district. On June 15, 1947, she was united in marriage to Myron Young at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, where she remained a lifelong member. Judge Kimball contacted Betty and asked if she would become involved in a new probation department in Mower County. This began her 30-year career as a probation officer. Following her retirement, she worked part-time at Johnson Floral. She enjoyed bowling, dancing at the The Terp and The Oasis, and loved working with kids. Betty and Myron moved to The Cedars of Austin in 2012.

Betty is survived by her three children: Wanda (Michael) Gwinn of Longmont, Colorado, Brian (Wynn) Young of Waltham, Minnesota, and Mary Beth (Roger) Norris of Oakland, Minnesota; seven grandchildren: Stacie, Katie, Christopher, Uri, Brianna, William, and Lukas; nine great-grandchildren; siblings: Marlys Kime of Austin, Daryl (Luanne) Madson of Kasson, Minnesota, Helen (Lewis) Johnson of San Diego, California, Sharon (Ed) Hill of Mount Vernon, Iowa.
