Bitter cold to close ‘14

Mower County is closing 2014 on a bitter note, at least in terms of temperatures.

The National Weather Service issued a wind chill advisory for 12 a.m. to noon Tuesday. After a high near 10 degrees Monday, temperatures are expected to dip to 6 below zero overnight with wind chill values at 15 to 30 below zero Tuesday morning.

The weather service warned of dangerous cold and urged people to avoid spending time outside. At wind chills between 15 and 30 below, frostbite can affect exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, according to the weather service.

Tuesday’s high will be near 3 degrees and temperatures will drop Tuesday night to about minus 7. Another wind chill advisory appears likely for Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, when wind chills were again expected to dip to 20 to 30 below.

In a way, the bitter cold is a fitting end to 2014, a year that started with a bitter winter that saw a record 50-plus days below zero from Dec. 1, 2013, through the end of last winter. Through March 2, 2014, Austin’s average temperature was 6.3 degrees — 6.1 in January and 6.5 in February. The bitter cold conditions caused an unprecedented number of frozen pipes in southern Minnesota.

For New Year’s Eve, the high will be around 10, and the weather should warm to a high of 21 for New Year’s Day.
