Wednesday’s snow couldn’t stop Charlie Parr from returning to his hometown for a concert, but it did keep him from recording the show for a live album.

Parr played at a busy Veterans of Foreign War club, 300 Fourth Ave. NE, for a show that raised money for Austin’s Beyond the Yellow Ribbon.

“It’s wonderful,” Parr said. “I get to be in my hometown and see my family.”

Parr had originally planned to record the show with the possibility of releasing it as a live album. However, several inches of snow in southern Minnesota and several accidents were reported on Interstate 35, which kept Parr’s harmonica player and sound engineer from making it to Austin for the concert.

But a live album could still be in Parr’s future.

“Stuff like that, I’m not on a timeline,” Parr said. “It’s something I want to do. It’ll happen sometime.”

Fans should still see a new Parr album next year. Parr recorded his next studio release, “Stump Jumper,” in North Carolina, and he’s now working on the post-production process with plans to release it next spring.

Parr said it was nice to play a show with his mom, Inamae, and other family in the crowd, even though he joked his son went to grandma’s to watch TV.

Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Chairman Paul Spyhalski estimated more than 130 people attended the show, making for more than $1,300 raised for the veteran’s group.

“We love you,” one man told Parr between his two sets, shortly before fans came up to buy records from Parr and snap a few pictures with him.

VFW Commander Scott Wiechmann was pleased with the turnout for Parr’s show, which served as the kick off to the club’s winter concert series.

Jesse Smith opened with an acoustic set. Smith returns with Cosmic tonight for a concert he described as a jam session, as he invited people to come see the show and he invited some musicians to come and jam. Cosmic will play at 8 p.m. tonight. Cost is $3 per person and people are asked to bring a food shelf item for the Salvation Army.

The VFW series will continue with the Starlight Lounge Band, which features former Austin residents, at 8 p.m. on Dec. 20, with the Austin High School Jazz Band will opening the show 7 p.m. Tickets will be a freewill donation for the AHS jazz band.

The holiday weekend will be a busy one for Parr. He was set to play with Mississippi blues musician Leo Welch at Hell’s Kitchen in Minneapolis on Friday, The Red Herring Lounge in Duluth on Saturday and Ed’s No Name Bar in Winona on Sunday.
