BLOOMING PRAIRIE — The No. 6 seeded Lyle-Pacelli volleyball team certainly didn’t look like an underdog early on against No. 3 Blooming Prairie Thursday, but the Awesome Blossoms eventually took control to score a win in the Section 1A West quarterfinals.

The Blossoms (17-12 overall) won the match by scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18 to end LP’s season.

BP’s front line controlled the match as Madison Worke had 15 blocks to go with her 18 kills, Taylor Hagen had 12 kills and 10 blocks and Alyssa Krohnberg had 12 blocks.

“They played well and it was just some errors on our part where they were off by an inch or two,” LP head coach Lindsay Leif said of her team. “Blooming played well and they hit some spots. I think the difference was Blooming’s blocking.”

BP tied up the second game at 22-22 after Lauren Larkoski hammered down a kill, but LP scored three of the last four points. The first game was tied at 20-20 before the Blossoms scored five of the last four points.

“We started off slow and we can’t do that,” Worke said. “It’s the playoffs and we’ve got to get going. After we lost the second game, we needed to start getting our passes on target and we need to start finishing plays. It was as simple as that.”

BP, which hadn’t played a match in more than a week, jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the third and fourth games.

“Lyle-Pacelli has athletic girls. We knew that if we gave them some wiggle room, they would definitely go with it,” BP head coach Gina McLaughlin said. “I think this is a good wake-up call. When you go through the lines and you shake hands and there are girls on the other side crying. That’s the alternative.”

Nicole Inwards had 21 digs for BP and Worke had 14 set assists.

“Madison is a gamer and it’s fun to see,” McLaughlin said. “It’s nice that she’s in such a clutch position where she can set and hit. Nicole played a good all-around game. She had some nice service runs.”

Sarah Holtz had 12 kills for LP (14-12 overall) and Madison Truckenmiller, a senior, had 10 kills in her final match.

“I told them not to hang their heads,” Leif said. “This is by far the best they’ve ever shown up to play for a playoff game.”

BP will now play in the Section 1A West semifinals against No. 2 Hayfield at Mayo Civic Center in Rochester Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
