Blossoms are ready for another shot at state

The No. 2 seeded Awesome Blossoms are no stranger to the Section 1A title game and they’re hoping that gives them a lift when they play No. 1 seeded Rushford-Peterson with a trip to the Class A state tournament on the line at RCTC Stadium in Rochester Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

This is the seventh straight section title game appearance for the Blossoms (10-0 overall), but BP hasn’t advanced to the state tournament since 2011.

RP (9-1 overall) has been nothing short of dominant this season as it has outscored its opponents 41-8 points per game on average. The Trojans beat Faribault B.A. 66-20 last week in the Section 1A semifinals and their lone loss was a 7-6 shortcoming at Caledonia Sept. 5.

RP has shutout three teams this season and it has scored at least 30 points seven times.

“It’s going to need to be a complete game,” BP head coach Chad Gimbel said. “Offensively we’ll have to make some long drives and make some plays and defensively we’re going to have to get some stops.”

The Trojans like to run out of the wish-bone, but they also have a solid quarterback and two good wide receivers that make their passing game a threat as well. Defensively, RP has size, speed and strength.

“They’ve got athletes, there’s no doubt about that,” Gimbel said. “They run to the ball and they fly around.”

BP has a lot of seniors at key positions and that should give the Blossoms a sense of urgency in a big game.

“This is the most seniors we’ve had with a group,” Gimbel said. “They know what to expect and I hope they’re prepared. We’re playing a good team and they’re going to stop us at times and get some points. We can’t let that get us down.”
