Best Bets: Halloween makes an appearance

The first weekend of October is filled with fall fun. With Halloween showing it’s face, some comedy and fundraisers, this weekend will have something for everyone.

1. Halloween Warm-Up

6-8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Jay C. Hormel Nature Center

Take a 45-minute hike along magical, enchanted trails “haunted” by creatures, critters, and spirits of the night, followed by cider and treats in the Visitor Center. Especially designed to appeal to children ages 4 to 11 (accompanied by an adult) — but all ages are welcome. Tickets $6; first hike at 6:50 p.m. and last hike at 9:10 p.m. Tickets available Sept. 5 through Oct. 4 at Super Fresh Produce, Bakery and Garden Center. 2. Comedy Night at the Theatre

7:30-9 p.m., Historic Paramount Theatre

Presented by The Paramount Theatre and Rotaract, this event will feature Ali Sultan, with Linda Aaron and Chris Klavetter, and MC’d by Angelo Vescio. For more information, call 507-434-0934.

3. Veteran Appreciation Day

8:30-10:30 a.m., Saturday, American Legion, St. Ansgar, Iowa

The 11th annual Veteran Appreciation Day at the St. Ansgar, Iowa, American Legion will be Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. It is free. Veterans, spouses and the public are welcome to attend. There are no fees and it costs nothing to join. Char’s Polka Band will play. A delicious lunch will be served by Paradise Pizza. There will be two discussion groups, WWII and Korean War-Era. Come meet veterans and hear their unique stories.

4. Zonta Beanbag Tournament

1-5 p.m., Saturday, The Windrift Restaurant

Fundraiser with proceeds going to the Zonta Club of Austin, which focuses on helping to improve the lives of women and children locally, nationally and internationally. Call Shelley at (507) 437-3282 for more information.

5. Lighthouse Show, Tina and Lena

7-9 p.m., Saturday, Lighthouse Theatre, Albert Lea

Tina and Lena are doing their retirement tour. They will be video taping this performance so please come and share this moment with them and be a part of the live audience in celebration of their years of entertaining. The popular Minnesota comedy-singing duo, “Tina and Lena,” are two of the funniest, friendliest ladies you’ll ever meet. Witty, wild and wonderful, they pull out all the stops to entertain audiences of all ages.

6. Dad’s Belgian Waffle Breakfast

9 a.m.-1 p.m., Sunday, Austin Eagles Club

The all you can eat, Dad’s Belgian Waffle Breakfast fundraiser is here. This fundraiser will benefit programs and services for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families provided by The Arc Mower County.Advance tickets are available at The Arc office, The Austin Eagles Club or from any member of the Board of Directors. Costs range from $8 for adults or $5 for children ages 6 to 12. At the door tickets range from $9 for adults or $6 for children ages 6 to 12. Children 5 and under are free.
