Hagedorn attributes his victory to the sheer amount of time spent meeting Republican voters all over the district. He said that shaking hands and talking in person was critical to his campaign. He says he also focused on rural areas, especially in the western side of the district, that are often overlooked by campaigns.

He has campaigned in recent months on repealing the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, repealing fiscal regulations under the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, also known as the Dodd-Frank Act, and severely curtailing the Environmental Protection Agency and its power to regulate farmers.

He’ll face Democratic Rep. Tim Walz, who is seeking his fifth term in Congress.

Primary results: GOP U.S. District 1

Jim Hagedorn: 12,609 votes, 53.9 pct.

Aaron Miller: 10,797 votes, 46.1 pct.
